Freight is one of the cornerstones of the South African economy and is an important component of traffic using the road network. Freight consists of four vehicle groups – local, medium, heavy and long-distance vehicles.
Freight is not regulated or managed by local government. However, the Transport Directorate does have a role to play in relation to the network, and is in process of setting standards that will benefit users of the network.
