The City of Cape Town’s Transport Directorate is currently busy with temporary repairs and stabilisation on the vertical concrete service structure beside the road at 13 Victoria Road in Clifton.

Work is scheduled to commence on Monday, 8 March 2021 and is scheduled to take place from Monday to Saturday between 08:00 and 17:00 for approximately three weeks, pending unforeseen delays and inclement weather.

The emergency repairs work is implemented to stabilise a services drop structure against an embankment along Victoria Road in Clifton. The rock face that supports the existing concrete structure has eroded, causing cracking, thus weakening the concrete structure. The temporary stabilisation solution will provide additional support to the road until such time as the permanent construction work can be done.

The emergency works entail:

  • Crack repairs to the existing concrete column structure
  • Drilling and installation of rock bolts
  • Fixing galvanised metal strips to the rock bolts
  • Preparation of the slope comprising scaling and trimming of the slope surface of obviously loose materials and removal of vegetation where necessary to create a safe and clean working surface
  • Reinstating existing services which may have been previously damaged or dislodged throughout the construction process
  • Removal of loose, collapsed material, soil, rubble and tree stumps at the base of the existing embankment

‘The emergency work is needed to ensure the safety of road users while we are working in a plan for a more permanent solution Furthermore, although the physical work is not being performed on the actual road surface itself, we will implement a stop-go-system for those using this narrow curved road. We also want to ask motorists to approach this area with caution while the work is ongoing,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Transport, Alderman Felicity Purchase.
