The City of Cape Town’s MyCiTi bus service today launched the official MyCiTi mobile app and new website. Commuters can now enjoy these online platforms as their personal planning tools to map out their journey; search for timetables and buses; calculate their trip fare; and check their card balance.

The City’s new MyCiTi app and website will provide live updates and notifications relating to timetables, routes, or news alerts to customers while they are travelling. These online platforms will be a reliable source of information that commuters can depend on. It will also create possibilities for residents who may be reluctant to use the MyCiTi service due to time-sensitive schedules. Commuters will also have access to a help interface via the new app where queries or notices can be sent to the Transport Information Centre directly.

‘I believe this is a great investment into the lives of our MyCiTi customers. Over the years the need for real time information has proved to be one of the top priorities for the MyCiTi commuters. Being able to manage their time by tailoring their route and schedules, and finding the buses best suited to their needs is empowering and satisfying. Time is precious and all of us never seem to have enough of it. The live updates functionality of this MyCiTi app empowers commuters with more reliable information to make informed travel decisions,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Transport, Alderman Felicity Purchase.

The new MyCiTi app and website provide real time information, including live updates for passengers to track their bus. This makes it easier for passengers to get around especially when there are unpredictable factors at play such as traffic congestion, bad weather and road accidents. When passengers view the bus timetables on the new official app or website, the location of buses is tracked and the scheduled times are updated with more reliable estimates of when each bus is due to arrive.

‘Our latest MyCiTi annual passenger survey found that 90% of our passengers own a smartphone and more than 80% are happy to receive information about MyCiTi digitally. Our aim with the new app and website has always been to respond to these needs by creating a quick and efficient way to interact with our customers while they are travelling,’ said Alderman Purchase.

By downloading this free app, MyCiTi commuters will now be able to access details about transfers and connections to other modes of transport, with handy directions and searches. The app also features information on where to purchase myconnect cards and to top up. There is also an interface for myconnect cards to read card details and check the balance. This feature is currently only available on Android phones.

The MyCiTi app can be downloaded free on Apple (iOS) and Android (Google Play) app stores.

‘Our next priority is to make available the live updates on Google Maps and to third-party developers for use in their own software applications, subject to guidelines prescribing the use of the data and the MyCiTi brand. Developers who have not already done so are encouraged to sign up on the MyCiTi website in order to be notified once this service becomes available,’ said Alderman Purchase.
