The MyCiTi service is still being disrupted as the unprotected strike by some bus drivers continues. Commuters are advised to please make alternative travel arrangements until further notice. 

The City of Cape Town wants to reiterate that the bus drivers are employed by the Vehicle Operating Companies (VOCs) and not the City. The City has long-term contracts with the VOCs to operate the MyCiTi bus routes across Cape Town.

The VOCs have informed the City of Cape Town that some of the bus drivers who have participated in the unprotected strike are slowly reporting for duty. However, the majority of the MyCiTi routes are still not operational. Commuters should please take note that the service will only run according to schedule once all bus drivers have returned to work.

Some of the bus drivers embarked on the unprotected strike at approximately 05:00 on the morning of 15 October 2018. It is unclear for how long the strike will continue. The City is monitoring the situation and will inform commuters accordingly.

‘Of great concern are reports of the intimidation of those bus drivers who are not participating, and who reported for duty on 15 October 2018. The intimidation was rife at the Civic Centre station in the central business district as commuters from Mitchells Plain and Khayelitsha were disembarking in the morning. 

‘The bus drivers are represented by trade unions and their conditions of employment are the subject of a collective bargaining agreement. The annual national wage negotiations take place at the South African Road Passenger Bargaining Council (SARPBAC) National Bargaining Forum. A wage agreement was reached as recently as May this year, following a protracted four-week strike in April. I urge those who have embarked on this strike to use the structures and processes in place to address any grievances or concerns they may have regarding their employment.

‘I again urge the VOCs and their employees to meet as soon as possible and to engage through the appropriate channels to resolve the impasse so that the MyCiTi service can resume operations,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Transport and Urban Development, Councillor Brett Herron. 

The City wants to inform those commuters with monthly MyCiTi tickets that they will be reimbursed with the number of days that they could not make use of the service due to the strike action and which resulted the buses being grounded.
