The City of Cape Town’s Transport Directorate recently commenced with the resurfacing work on the northbound carriageway of Jan Smuts Drive in Athlone, from the intersection with Klipfontein Road to the N2 boundary.

Work is scheduled to take place between 09:00 and 16:00 from Monday to Saturday. The completion date is 15 June 2021, pending unforeseen delays and inclement weather.

The resurfacing is part of our continuous road maintenance programme and is implemented to ensure the longevity of our road network, and to improve the safety of all road users.

Although no road closures are anticipated, we foresee that traffic flow will be impeded around the construction areas. To manage this, we will have flag personnel regulating the traffic flow either by temporary lane diversions or temporary lane closures.

‘While we are working on making our roads more durable, the safety of our residents and motorist takes first precedence. Thus, we urge residents and motorists to be extra cautious when moving around the construction site, to please comply with the displayed signage and adjust accordingly, and to ensure that their parked vehicles do not hamper the work that must take place. With winter upon us, we urge motorists to keep their headlights on, maintain a safe following distance and slow down when approaching the site in the interest of their own safety and the safety of the workers and pedestrians. We also encourage them to consider using alternative routes to minimise delays,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Transport, Alderman Felicity Purchase.
