The City of Cape Town’s Transport Directorate commenced with the resurfacing of Buitenkant Street between Darling Street and Mill Street, District Six, Oranjezicht and Gardens this week. The roadworks will continue until 15 December 2021, weather permitting.
The City’s Road Infrastructure Management Department will be resurfacing this portion of Buitenkant street on weekends from 08:00 till 17:00 on both Saturday and Sunday. Construction work on the section between Darling Street and Caledon Street may require work afterhours between 21:00 and 05:00.
These projects will see 1,10 km of Buitenkant Street resurfaced.
‘These roads have been identified and prioritised for resurfacing by the Roads Infrastructure Management team in the district during site visits to ensure that the allocated operational budget is spent equitably among all wards and suburbs in the district. This project will complement a sidewalk and traffic light upgrade contract that is currently under construction on Buitenkant Street between Darling Street and Roeland Street. Although we have tried to arrange for the work on weekends to miss the busy working weekdays in town, congestion is to be expected and we recommend that road users consider alternative routes where possible. We thank you for your cooperation and patience while we get this important work done,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Transport, Councillor Rob Quintas.
Traffic moving in both directions will be affected, however, flag personnel will direct traffic by means of temporary detours around the work area, which will be demarcated.
Residents are advised that vehicles may be parked in driveways, if and when access is available. If vehicles are parked in the road and obstruct the work, they will be moved or towed away.
The roadworks will entail the removing of the top asphalt layer and replacing it with a new asphalt surface.
Roads are identified and prioritised for resurfacing by the Roads Infrastructure Management team in the district during site visits and according to the relevant district office’s planned schedule. This schedule addresses each area within the district to ensure that the allocated operational budget is spent equitably among all wards and suburbs.
