Non-motorised transport (NMT), which includes walking and cycling, is a fundamental mode of transport within Cape Town's transport network. The City is committed to improving and promoting non-motorised transport to acknowledge the significant role it plays in Cape Town's transport system.

The City has developed 435 km of cycleway and a new intervention is to colourise cycleways green in order to clearly indicate cycleways as well as the presence of cyclists to motorised transport.

TCT's NMT strategy aims to make Cape Town a city where all people feel safe and secure to walk and cycle. The aim is to extend the cycle network so that  it is an integrated and continuous network within the integrated transport system. TCT's Integrated Public Transport Network 2032 sees NMT as the most important mode in the public transport network that must be promoted and accommodated in all aspects of design.
